This shoot was really special to me. It's a shoot that was for my mom. My mom is one of those special people that was just always creative and had amazing ideas. She supported my weird and crazy ideas. I mean you know you have a cool mom when you can yell “Hold on mom I’m working on my pregnant mermaid chest piece.” with a straight face.
So thank you to my amazing team who helped this shoot come to be and thank you to my mom who was so patient and willing to shoot with me. Also thank you mom for getting splashed by ocean water and whipped by gale force winds !!!
How It Started:
How do they look mom ?
It all started with a dream. I dreamt of mermaids swimming and bathing in the sunlight. They looked so angelic and I tried so hard to focus on the colors and magic they gave off.
Then, as one does, I awoke and texted my whole coven on how to prep for this shoot. I started making headpieces (which ended up breaking pre-shoot), bras and finding a location.
The goal was to create the same magic I saw before… but darker! Obvi I always go a little darker.
During The Shoot:
My Beautiful mama ✨
The beach was PACKED that day! The beach usually has some locals and occasionally some visitors but today it was packed full. We found a place to park and started to unload.
~Backstory Sidetrack~
I was at the beach about two weeks before this shoot. I was bathing with one of my coven members on a magical ocean day (Lunar New Year). Once we were finished swimming I went to get my phone to check the time and it was GONE! What does one do? I used my tile all over the beach trying to find it. Then I logged into “Find My Iphone” and saw that it was all the way in Santa Maria! Welp I can tell you I wasn’t in Santa Maria. So someone had grabbed my phone and drove an hour away. Luckily my phone has a phone number on the screen that you can call and report it lost. So they called us and we got to drive up and get it back.
Kat and I treating ourselves after getting the phone back!
So you can understand my paranoia on that same beach where people are everywhere and my attention needs to be elsewhere. Luckily I have my amazing team with me who kept an eye on things.
The wind was crazy ! so every five seconds we had to readjust hair & bangs, watch for waves and on top of it watch for people.
After The Shoot:
Mom feeling the coastal chill!
I took me about two weeks to edit and get my images all together. Once they were done I sent them off to Gilded Magazine. A couple days later they accepted and they will be published March 7th 2024.
